Tick Tack Stud

Updated: Jun 20, 2019

We are currently in search of our next addition animals to include in the pet therapy program. www.animal-assisted-interventions.org

We are looking at minature horses.

We had a lovely few visits to the Tick Tack Stud, to evaluate our choices.

Mini horses also make affectionate companions, happy to be lead around on walks. Their friendly demeanor makes them ideal family pets.

These days, some miniature horses are used as service animals around the world as the new ADA regulations contain a specific provision which covers miniature horses. .”

Miniature horses must possess a sound temperament and good structure before being considered.

  • They must be individually trained to meet their person’s needs,

  • Miniature Horses who work require extensive desensitization so they’re able to work calmly through distractions. Horses can be naturally spooked, so socialization ranks high on the list of requirements. Along with possible task training.

  • Miniature Horses should not be ridden by anyone over 30 kgs; however, Miniatures are extremely adept at learning to drive

Lifespan: 25 – 30 years

  • All miniature horses can be trained but not all miniature horses will make a great therapy horse.

  • Its our goal to pick horses we feel will love their job as much as we do.

  • Horses advance thru our levels as they acquire training hours and advance in the level of difficulty.

After the initial “getting to know you” phase, we work on:

  • basic good horse manners,

  • basic lead work, and

  • basic commands.

The time to master these skills usually varies a bit from horse to horse.

  • The horse has completed all the necessary training worked thru obstacles, mock-visit training, loud noises and other experiences that are not normal for the average horse to provide calm interactions.

  • These unique little animals don’t have the social drive dogs do, and so they stand very quietly while working

  • Mini horses house train easily.

  • They require a small amount of outdoor space.

  • For people who cannot work with dogs for religious reasons, a miniature horse can provide an excellent solution.
